The
hostas are originally from the East, particularly from Japan but also from
China and Korea . The first species cultivated in Europe was the hosta
plantaginea with large green leaves and their white perfumed flowers.
The first species was soon followed by the hosta ventricosa, imported
to England by Lamarck.
From the 1960's onwards, more than two centuries later, these hostas began
to know of their present-day success.
Today, there are at least 3500 varieties recorded.
For the curious visitor, there are about fifty varieries in our garden.
