Le jardin de Jumaju
Les roses anciennes des Fieffes
Welcome in our garden
proverb: He that won't be consll'd, can't be help'd
The in troduction in France, and in the rest of Europe of what is now called the Rose of Bourbon remains a very complicated story with lots of obscure areas and also quite a few fanciful stories.
The whole groups seems to find its roots in hybrid "rose Edouard" that was found in Bourbon island (La Réunion) at the beginning of 19 th century and which naturally grew in uncultivated spots.
The seeds of this rose tree sent to famous gardener Antoine Jacques (gardener of Philippe d'Orléans, futur king Louis XVIII ) gave birth to the first rose tree marketed as early as 1823 under the name of The Bourbon island rose.
Hardy, in charge of Jardin du Luxembourg, also received seeds from the same origin which gave birth to a pale pink double rose tree which he named "rose de l'Ile de France" another name given at that time to La Réunion.
The same seeds were to correspond to a third name, which can largely explain the ongoing confusion.
Two excellent creations from Despres in 1883 ensured definite success to the family : it was "Mme Desprez" with pretty lilac pink and "Charles Desprez" with soft pink.
In 1875, we could list no less than 500 species of which only a few dozens remain today
