Portlands roses
Portland rose first appeared by the end of 18th century.
This remontant rose called "Duchess of Portland" after the Duchess
who had presumably sent it to Empress Josephine.
According to legend, this rose had been brought from Italy by the third duchess
of Portland who had a craze for roses. We now know through her correspondence
that the Duchess had never set foot in Italy and more that this rose tree
had already been listed in a catalogue of 1775 !
Its main characteristic is that it's got flowers all around the year which
has made it ever so famous. Its parents are probably "rosa x damascena
bifera" and "rosa gallica officinalis".
When it reached France, this hybrid must have accounted for the birth of famous
"rose Lelieur", rose tree grower of King Louis XVIII who asked him
to rename it "rose of the King"
Portlands are small size shrubs with numerous red and pink flowers and very
few white roses.
